Booking the motorcycle theory test, and the ID you need

Booking is the easy part. Identification is where candidates come unstuck, and they find out on the morning of the test.

Booking

The category AM test is booked online through the official Driver Theory Test service and sat at one of the forty-plus test centres across the Republic of Ireland. The fee is €45.00, checked in September 2026 — confirm the current figure during booking.

The motorcycle and car tests are booked through the same system, so take care to select category AM. Availability differs by centre, and a centre slightly further away will sometimes offer a materially earlier date.

Identification

Bring one of the following, in hard copy:

Two rules worth checking a week ahead. The document must be physical — a photo on your phone is not accepted. And the name on it must match the name on your booking exactly. If you arrive late, or without accepted identification, you will not be allowed to test and you lose the fee.

Decide about postponing a week out, not the night before. At seven days the change is free; at two days it costs half the fee whichever way you go.

Results

A pass or fail is shown on screen at the end of the test, with a report identifying the category areas you answered correctly and incorrectly. There is no limit on attempts; waiting at least three complete business days before a re-sit is strongly advised, and gives you time to act on that report.

A pass produces a certificate valid for two years from the date of the test, which is the window in which to apply for your motorcycle learner permit and get on with IBT.

Frequently asked questions

What ID do I need for the motorcycle theory test?

One hard-copy photographic document: a Public Services Card, a passport valid or expired by no more than 12 months, an Irish Passport Card, an EU/EEA or Swiss national identity card, an Irish category B or A learner permit or driving licence, an Irish Travel Document, or a current Ukraine driving licence. The name must match your booking exactly.

How long is the motorcycle theory test certificate valid?

Two years from the date of your test. Apply for your motorcycle learner permit within that window, and allow for IBT, which is at least sixteen hours across four modules.

Practise the real test shape

Car & Bike Theory Ireland turns this material into separate category BW and AM practice: full 40-question mocks on the real timing, a road-signs trainer, rider guides, and an explanation on every answer.
