Booking
Tests are booked online through the official Driver Theory Test service and taken at one of the forty-plus test centres across the Republic of Ireland. The category BW car test costs €45.00, checked in September 2026 — confirm the current fee during booking.
Availability varies considerably between centres. If your nearest one is booked out, check a centre half an hour further away before accepting a date weeks later; the extra travel is often cheaper than the delay.
Identification you must bring
You must bring one of the following, in hard copy:
- Public Services Card with photograph
- Passport, valid for international use or expired by no more than 12 months
- Irish Passport Card, valid and in good condition
- National identity card from an EU or EEA member state, or Switzerland
- Irish category B (car) or category A (motorcycle) learner permit or full driving licence
- Irish Travel Document
- Current Ukraine driving licence
Two rules that cost people their fee. A photograph or scan on your phone is not accepted — the document must be physical. And the name on your identification must match the name on your booking exactly. A booking made as "Kate" with a passport reading "Katherine" is a mismatch. Check both the week before, not the night before.
Candidates sitting the bus (category D) or truck (category C) tests must additionally present a full current Irish category B driving licence, or a category C or D learner permit or driving licence.
The two ways to lose your fee
If you arrive late for your appointment, or without the required identification, you will not be allowed to test and you lose the fee. There is no discretion in either case, so plan the journey with the assumption that something will go wrong on the way.
Rescheduling and cancelling
| Notice given | Reschedule | Cancel |
|---|---|---|
| 7 or more calendar days | Free | Free |
| 3 to 6 calendar days | 50% fee | 50% fee, 50% refunded |
| 2 calendar days or fewer | 50% fee | No refund |
| On the day of the test | Not permitted | No refund |
The practical consequence is that the decision to postpone should be made a week out, not the night before. If you are not hitting 38 out of 40 in full mocks seven days before the test, rescheduling then is free; deciding the same thing two days out costs you half the fee.
After you pass
The certificate is valid for two years from the date of your test, and you should apply for a learner permit within that window. See the main guide for what follows.
